Homemade candles are simple to make, and they make thoughtful gifts too.
You’ll need: soy wax flakes (about 1 pound fills two 8-ounce jars), pre-tabbed cotton wicks, heat-safe glass jars, a pouring pitcher, a candy thermometer, fragrance oil, and clothespins or wick holders.
How to make them:
Secure each wick to the bottom of a clean jar with a wick sticker or a dab of hot glue.
Melt the wax in a pouring pitcher set in a pot of simmering water, heating it to about 185°F.
Remove from heat and stir in the fragrance oil (about 1 ounce per pound of wax) for two full minutes.
Let the wax cool to around 135°F, then pour slowly into the jars.
Center each wick with a clothespin and let the candles set for at least 24 hours.
Trim the wicks to ¼ inch. For the best scent, let them cure for a week before lighting.
